Houston Downtown Photowalk Update for July 2

The Downtown @ Night Houston Photowalk is only 16 days away!

The number of people interested in the photowalk took me by surprise. We filled the 50 slots in 5 days, and continue to get emails from people who want to be placed on the waiting list!

Soon, we'll be letting everyone know about more photowalk events in Houston! Meanwhile, if turns out you can't make it on the 18th, please let me know. We'll give your spot to someone else.

You guys are sending in some great questions about how photowalks work. To help those who are new, and the seasoned walkers, I'll send out a few tips here and there.

Here's our first couple of questions:

Which lenses should I bring?
I suggest only one lens. You can count on wind downtown. So swapping lenses in the wind guarantees you'll get dirt in your gear. I suggest a fast wide angle and leave the rest at home.
How should I prepare for a night time photowalk?
The number one answer for that is to get to know your camera. You might not be able to see the buttons in the dark. So take your camera in the back yard at night and snap your garden! Also, point and shoot users should read any low-light or night time information in your camera's manual.

Keep an eye out for more updates and details! See you Saturday the 18th!

Should I bring bug spray?
You live in Texas. :) You probably won't need to carry the can with you, but a healthy spray as you get out of your car is probably a really good idea.
What if it rains?
Not sure about that one yet. We know that the inside of UH-D is not available for us. As we get closer to the date, we'll have a better idea of the weather. Also, if you can stand the rain, how great would photos of lighting over Downtown Houston be?
Are there any contests?
Official attendees are eligible for the photo contest at the World Wide Photowalk Site. More details to follow.
Anything else?
Yep. Don't use your car's air conditioner for the last 10 or 15 minutes of your drive to Downtown. This lets you gradually get used to the heat outside, and most importantly, lets the internals of your camera acclimate to the temperature and humidity. You're going to be really bummed out if you step out of your very cold car and the camera lens fogs up for 30 minutes. :(
